Why the FB In A Box

The Friendship Bench In A Box brings together lessons from over 10 years of FB work in an effort to provide a coherent step by step process on how to introduce Friendship Bench in a new setting or how to maintain/sustain Friendship Bench in an area where it has already been introduced.

Core Elements

  1. The Box

Designed to engage senses and give a physical feel of
what ingredients are needed for Friendship Bench
implementation. Each Box is tagged with a unique QR
code which connects to the digital portal. The Box contains:

• Orientation Sheet

• Team Guides
• Training Curriculas (Level 1, Level 2, Level 3)
• Trainee Handbooks (Level 1, Level 2, Level 3)
• Value cards (Research, Empathy, Connectedness)
• Screening tools
• FB cards

2. The Digital Portal

With the FB In A Box, partners gain access to the portal which provides extra guides, reporting framework and dashboard, technical support and the tools needed for long-term implementation. The portal holds all the materials in the Box, including access to real time technical support, data collection and reporting frameworks, dashboards, privacy, guidelines for use and subscription details.

Level 1

Opening the mind

Content:
Listening skills, how to be there for somebody, providing basic psychoeducation, how to summarise & use empathy as a tool to connect with others. Developing a therapeutic alliance through creating space for people to share their stories.

Materials & Tools:
• L1 Curricula
• L1 Handbook
• Website Sign-Up for Psychoeducation Materials

Timing:
Extended CKT to get to know one another + 4 hours

Level 2

Uplifting

Content:
All content in Level 1 +
How to use screening tools (SSQ-14, GAD-7, PHQ-9, PCL-5, SRQ-20),
identifying a “red flag” listing problems and selecting a single problem, referring to a higher level, to resources available, or to someone trained in level.

Timing:
L1 + 4 full days training

Level 3

Strengthening

Content:
All content in Level 1 + Level 2
Full Friendship Bench Problem-Solving Therapy training (including behaviour activation & Activity scheduling) to equip participants with skills and tools to mobilise through psychoeducation, screen with
validated tools, establish referral pathways, provide talk-therapy to clients and establish Circle Kubatana Tose peer support groups, along with monitoring progress through an automated reporting dashboard.

• FB Card (extended use)
• Data Collection Tools

Timing:
10 Full Days Training + Attachment Period
